When it comes to promoting creativity and imagination, kudos goes to the staff at the Willoughby Early Childhood Center in Norfolk, Virginia. One exciting way these young children have been able to foster their inventiveness and resourcefulness is by the school having an Imagination Playground in their gym. This amazing playground is composed of different size blocks for building a playhouse, castle, boat, or anything that children can pretend to build. At first, children build their own structures and then over time (with encouragement) they begin to work together.
Now, one must give kudos to Tyra Wooley. She was the recipient of receiving an Imagination Playground from writing a grant. Tyra had researched about the use of these blocks in helping children with physical and emotional development before submitting the grant.
Tops, Granny Krafter, and I were simply captivated when observing Tyra’s students. Their ability in working together to solve mathematical-related problems through kinesthetic techniques was truly amazing!
It was obvious they had learned the importance of working together; after all, more can be accomplished when working as a team, than when working alone.
Since the Imagination Playground is stored in the gym, all students have the opportunity in using it; especially during inclement weather when students are not able to venture outside for recess. What a wonderful alternative to outside play! All Pre-K Centers should have one!
